A New NVP Emerges, Kyler Gordon is Back, Montez Sweat’s Next Challenge, and Other Bears Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The first three days of this week have flown by. I wonder how the days between now and when the Bears kick off on Sunday will go.

Cornerback Kyler Gordon wasn’t on the first Bears injury report of the week, which brough a smile and sense of relief. When healthy, Gordon is an impact defender who can cover in man and zone, help in run support, and occasionally blitz the quarterback. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to see much of Gordon this year because of a variety of injuries. And when he finally got on the field in Saturday’s win, Gordon didn’t look like himself. Hopefully, that is in the past. “Definitely there was some tough times,” Gordon said Wednesday at Halas Hall (via the Tribune) reflecting on his road to recovery. “To be able to go through something like that as an athlete, a lot of people don’t understand what that’s like. Even myself, not being through (a lengthy injury) ever before. (I was) just being positive and letting God control the way.”

BEARS-RAMS PREVIEW: TWO CLOSERS, ONE FROZEN STAGE

Sticking on the defensive side of the ball, Jason Lieser (Sun-Times) writes about how much the Bears are counting on edge defender Montez Sweat to be a disruptive game-changer. Sweat received a game ball from Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson after the win against the Packers. Sweat didn’t come up with any sacks or tackles-for-loss, but he did have three quarterback hits and earned the fifth-highest grade among Chicago’s defensive players on Wild Card Saturday. This will be a tough challenge for Sweat. But even if Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford is able to get rid of the ball quickly, Sweat (and the rest of the D-line) would do well to get their hands up and fill potential passing lanes. A bold prediction: There will be at least one (1) tip drill interception thrown by Stafford this week. Montez Sweat celebrates a sack vs. the Lions. Mandatory Credit: David Banks-Imagn Images Over at Marquee, Scott Bair has a list of things the Bears need to fix heading into their playoff game against the Rams. Slow starts, a rushing attack that has been spinning its wheels in recent weeks, and takeaways are atop the list for obvious reasons. If I could add one more thing, it would be late-down defense — particularly in the first-half of games. Green Bay was 6 of 15 on third-down conversions last week, but were able to successfully move the chains on all fourth-down tries.

Look who just earned NVP honors:

— NFL on CBS ? (@NFLonCBS) January 14, 2026 Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was Nickelodeon’s NVP of the Wild Card Round. He joins teammate Colston Loveland, who won the honors earlier in his rookie season. And while Mitchell Trubisky will always have the distinction of being the first-ever NVP, Williams is the first Bears QB to win the award in a playoff win. That’s a big deal in my book. Remember when Trevon Diggs joined the Packers on a waiver claim? Well, you might not have noticed him in Green Bay’s playoff loss to the Bears. And with good reason. He played one snap, which was aptly described by Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith:

Diggs only played one snap in the game against the Bears, on the first possession of the game. On that one snap, a third-and-8, the Bears completed a short pass to Luther Burden, who picked up a first down while running behind a block from D.J. Moore, who knocked Diggs onto his back.

It was not an impressive play from Diggs, and the fact that the Packers never put him on the field again the rest of the game — even though there was no indication he was injured, and even as Caleb Williams was completing passes all over the field during a fourth-quarter comeback — suggests that the Packers didn’t have much confidence in Diggs’ ability to contribute.

It isn’t every day when you see Chicago sports media beef make national headlines. In other local sports media news, 670 The Score will begin simulcasting on 104.3 FM in Chicago on Feb. 2. It has been a long-time coming for the Chicago sports-talker. I can’t stop thinking about how great Cubs broadcasts are going to sound with Pat Hughes on the FM side of the dial. That will be tremendous broadcasting. This 2-minute clip from Danny Parkins covering sports and grief really hit home for me, so I thought it would be worth sharing in this space:

— Danny Parkins (@DannyParkins) January 15, 2026 That was so beautifully put. I got a chance to meet Danny Parkins in 2024 when he hosted the QB Town Hall at 670 The Score’s studios. It was a time where I was navigating life while trying to deal with depression, and wasn’t sure about a lot of things. But I had a really good conversation with Danny about sports and life, which gave me a new perspective that I carry with me to this day. Nearly two years later, I find myself thankful for that clarity. If this comes across your desk, thanks for your help, Danny. Keep on keeping on. John Harbaugh’s deal to become the next New York Giants isn’t officially official just yet, but it sounds like it soon will be. And once it goes down, it will be the first NFL coaching hire of this cycle. Does anyone remember who was the first hire of last year’s cycle? Of course you don’t. All that matters is that your team gets the right coach. For the sake of Giants fans, I hope this hire is more like the Tom Coughlin hire and less like the time the Chicago Bears hired John Fox.
