In the first event of the 2nd day of action in Austin for the Pro Swim Series, Indiana Swim Club’s Van Mathias roared to a new lifetime best in the 50 breaststroke in 26.57, notching a new Pro Swim Series Record, and becoming the fastest performer in the world this season.

Mathias’ swim lowered the Pro Series record in the event, previously held by Michael Andrew in 26.84 from 2023. Mathias had previously sat just behind South African breastroker Michael Houlie in the world standings on the season in 26.84. Houlie beat Mathias to earn that top spot at the U.S. Open Championships in early December in this same pool in 26.72. Mathias, now sitting atop the world standings, holds a .15 second advantage over Houlie on the season.

The time turned in by Mathias would have finished 2nd in Singapore at the 2025 World Swimming Championships; just three hundredths of a second behind gold medalist Simone Cerasuolo in 26.54. The 50 breast at the World CHampionships notably had no representation from team USA, with Campbell McKean finishing the highest for the Americans in 24th (27.32).

That 26.57 sits just five hundredths off of Andrew’s 2022 US Open Record (26.52), and only 12 hundreths away from Nic Fink‘s American Record of 26.45 from 2022.

Mathias revitalized his career in 2025, having stepped away from competition after his 5th year at Indiana, he then became the Director of Operations for the Hoosier’s swimming program. Following the results from US Trials, Mathias and the coaches at IU figured that he could still compete at the top of the sprint breaststroke events. 8 weeks later, Mathias qualified to represent the U.S. for the Pan Pacific Championships after his 26.76 50 breast at US Nationals. Mathias continues to balance the duties of his Director of Operations job, while still training on the side.

Mathias’s training partner Finn Brooks finished 2nd in the prelims this morning, notching a massive lifetime best in 27.05, obliterating his previous mark from the Speedo Summer Championships in 2024 of 28.69, which he swam opening up his 100 breast.

Another Indiana breaststroker, Brian Benzing was 4th in 27.67 this morning.
