The 54th annual Mexican Independence Day parade in Chicago’s Little Village neighborhood will step off at noon on Sunday.
The parade, which will begin at the iconic Little Village Arch at 26th and Albany, will feature dozens of floats, dance performances and mariachi bands, and is expected to draw thousands of visitors to the area.
According to officials, the parade will proceed down 26th Street to Kostner Avenue, covering approximately two and a half miles through the city. Rep. Jesús “Chuy” García will serve as the grand marshal, and a number of other officials and dignitaries are expected to attend.
This year’s event comes amid the backdrop of increased ICE enforcement operations in Chicago, with high-profile arrests and incidents adding to tensions surrounding the neighborhood.
Organizers of other celebrations, including El Grito Fest in Grant Park and a parade in Waukegan, canceled their events in the wake of the increased ICE enforcement actions, but organizers in Chicago said that the parade would go on as planned.
“For more than five decades this parade has shown pride, the strength, the resilience of our community,” said Jennifer Aguilar, Little Village Chamber of Commerce executive director. “I invited you all to join us to come out and celebrate with us in peace and pride.”
Some officials say continuing the parade as scheduled is their way of standing against the policies of President Donald Trump and his administration, and they say that the parade is an important way to celebrate the culture of the Mexican community in Chicago.
“They’re trying to dim our light, they’re trying to dim our culture, but we’re here to say we’re going to continue to be here, we’re going to continue to celebrate in a safe way,” said Alma Anaya, Cook County Board commissioner, who represents the 7th District.
Parade organizers said they have a plan in place in case immigration agents show up.
“We have more officers, we have more security, we’re working with ICIRR and other organizations that are trained in rapid response, who will be on site, who have immigration lawyers that will be on site,” Aguilar said.
