I’VE always gone for a foundation that offers full coverage and a semi-matte finish.
Anything less felt like a waste of time.
However, new lightweight foundations with added skincare benefits are punching above their weight.
I test three of them.
BUDGET
Max Factor Miracle Pure Skin Reset 2-in-1 Serum Foundation, £15.99 for 30ml
Max Factor Miracle Pure Skin Reset 2-in-1 Serum Foundation reduces inflammation and boosts hydrationI thought only luxury brands made good skin tints until I tried this – not only does the formula contain soothing bisabolol and all-rounder niacinamide which helps reduce inflammation, boost hydration, balance sebum production and prevent breakouts, but the matte finish is very forgiving on all skin types, and stays put all day.
The dropper bottle makes it easy to control how much you apply, and means it can be blended in with fingers, a brush or a sponge depending on your preference.
My only gripe is the range is limited to just nine shades, which feels borderline criminal in 2025 – fingers crossed for an extension ASAP.
MID-RANGE
Trinny London BFF De-Stress Tinted Serum, £41 for 50ml
Trinny London BFF De-Stress Tinted Serum far outperforms its price tagVersatility is one of the things I love most in a beauty product – if it can do more than one thing, it immediately feels like better value for money, and this product far out performs its price tag.
Packed with hydrating hyaluronic acid and brightening antioxidants, the ingredients help brighten skin and reduce uneven pigmentation, while the coverage is buildable so you can sheer it out where you don’t need much, and layer it up to act like a concealer on problem areas without it looking cakey.
I have to use setting powder to lock it in place, but if you have dry skin you’ll be able to leave it as is.
LUXURY
Victoria Beckham Beauty The Foundation Drops with TFC8, £104 for 30ml
This product gives a lit-from-within luminosity that immediately makes skin look healthyThis is one of the most surprising products I’ve tried this year.
Based on the name and description as a “lightweight luminous coverage” I expected it to be an extremely sheer, glowy formula which is the opposite of what I look for, but I was wrong.
The coverage is good enough to hide dark circles and acne scars while leaving skin still looking like skin – there’s no fake glossy, glittery radiance, just a lit-from-within luminosity that immediately makes skin look healthy. It’s the closest I’ll get to looking like a supermodel.
Plus, the TFC8 reduced fine lines and wrinkles in just six weeks. It’s expensive, but you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck.
Pick of the week
SEPTEMBER always feels like a fresh start to me, so if your skincare routine has been lacking, there’s no time like the present to get back on track – especially with Space NK The Hero Skincare Edit, £80 (but worth a huge £225) hitting shelves.
It contains an edit of seven products – from Medik8 Crystal Retinal 3’s skin-renewing vitamin A, Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum, and spot-busting Paula’s Choice 10% Azelaic Acid Booster. Alongside staples like moisturiser and body wash.
