Flags in Illinois and across the country will fly at half-staff through sunset on Sunday in memory of conservative activist and Chicago-area native Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed Wednesday while speaking at an event on a Utah university campus.
President Donald Trump ordered flags at the White House and all public buildings and grounds, along with all military posts, naval stations and naval vessels throughout the United States to fly at half-staff “as a mark of respect for the memory of Charlie Kirk” on Wednesday.
The order expires at sunset on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Flags in Illinois were already set to fly at half-staff Thursday to honor Patriot Day, and in remembrance of those killed on 9/11, as ordered by Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker.
Pritzker also ordered flags be lowered at state buildings across Illinois from sunset Friday, Sept. 12 through sunset Sunday, Sept. 14 to honor “victims of political violence.”
The active orders apply to flags on public buildings, so not every flag in the country falls under the order.
City of Aurora Mayor John Laesch said officials decided to raise municipal flags to full staff on Friday to complete their remembrance of 9/11, as they fall outside of the orders from Trump and Pritzker that apply to federal and state facilities, respectively.
“On Friday, our flags were raised again as we moved forward, carrying with us the spirit and memory of those who died,” the mayor said in a statement.
Some Aurora residents have questioned the decision.
“I recognize that some employees and community members may not agree with this decision, but lowering the flag is a solemn act that carries great weight,” the mayor said. “The choice to do so should not be made cavalierly. Doing so diminishes the importance of the remembrance of tragedies like September 11, 2001.”
