Police issued a warning Friday morning after two Greeley residents reported receiving child sexual abuse material in the mail at the beginning of the month.
The explicit material was accompanied by threats and demanded that the recipients pay cryptocurrency to avoid being reported to the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security for possessing the material.
Kristen Duus, the public information officer for the Greeley Police Department, said the department has only received those two reports from residents who live in different parts of the city. Officers are investigating whether there is a possible connection between the two.
The mail had no return address and a Canadian stamp, leading the department to suspect it was mailed from Canada, according to the release.
The department urged all residents to pay attention to their mail. Residents who receive mail without a return address or that seems suspicious are asked to call the department’s non-emergency number, 970-350-9600.
Duus said it’s important for residents not to open any suspicious mail.
The Loveland Police Department issued a similar statement this week. According to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, the mail had the explicit material, along with instructions on scanning a QR code, to visit a website, or call or text a listed number to send money. Like the mail in Greeley, threats of blackmail were made if demands weren’t met.
Asked Friday afternoon about whether other communities have reported receiving such mail, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation said it has not been asked to assist in either investigation and so had no additional information about the scope or reach of the scam.
Anyone with any information that could assist Greeley police with the investigation is asked to call the department’s non-emergency number.
