ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A shooting on Westmoreland Drive left a 1-year-old boy and a woman hospitalized with serious injuries. The Rochester Police Department said the gun unintentionally went off inside a house. Advocates and law enforcement are urging gun owners to prioritize gun storage safety.
Deborah Antoniades from Moms Demand Action emphasized the importance of securing firearms. “This is not an anti-gun message by any means—this is a matter of keeping our families safe,” said Antoniades. She highlighted the need for gun owners to secure their firearms every time they are put away.
Antoniades shared a tragic story of a friends teenage son who died after finding an unsecured firearm at a friend’s house. “they were playing with it if you can use the word playing and it went off and her son is dead,” she said.
Brighton Police Department and Moms Demand Action stressed the first step in protecting families is to secure firearms. “Approximately 360 children each year in the U.S. unintentionally shoot themselves or someone else, resulting in lifelong trauma,” Antoniades said.
New York state law mandates secure storage of firearms, and Brighton passed its own safe storage law in 2019. Capt. Jose Craballo of the Brighton Police Department said, “Every gun owner plays a critical part in keeping our community safe and it starts at home and the proper securing of your firearms.”
To encourage safe storage, Brighton PD is offering free gun locks. Craballo demonstrated how to use these locks, saying, “Just slide it through the top come back through the bottom—push that in remove the key make sure you check that it actually locked.”
Free gun locks are available at the Brighton Police Department on Elmwood Avenue between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday while supplies last.
