The Chicago Bears are creating some space under the salary cap thanks to star cornerback Jaylon Johnson and a nifty bit of bookkeeping.
ESPN’s Field Yates has details (via Twitter/X) on some contract restructuring around the league, which includes the Bears’ Pro Bowl cornerback:
Teams creating cap space via contract restructures:The Falcons created $6M by restructuring WR Darnell Mooney’s dealThe Bills created just under $8M by restructuring OT Dion Dawkins’ dealThe Bears created $8M by restructuring CB Jaylon Johnson’s deal
— Field Yates (@FieldYates) September 3, 2025Jaylon Johnson’s restructured contract creates a cool $8 million in Bears cap space
The folks at Spotrac had the Bears with $6,273,339 in available cap space at the start of the day. Meanwhile, OverTheCap’s estimates had Chicago’s football team with $9,513,752 in cap space. I’ll monitor these sites throughout the day to see if there are updates. And when they do come across, I’ll be sure to update the post. In the meantime, the Jaylon Johnson contract restructuring is helpful to the team right now. How helpful it will be for this front office remains to be seen.
Cornerback Jaylon Johnson and the Bears agreed to a four-year extension in March 2024. The deal was worth up to $76 million, included $54 million in guarantees, and could net the two-time Pro Bowl cornerback up to $60 million over the first three years. But since then, a bunch of cornerbacks have signed mega deals of their own — and Johnson has certainly noticed the wave of new deals. Perhaps a contract restructuring now is something that can open the door to a re-worked deal down the line. I might be getting ahead of myself here, but this is something that we should be mindful of as we move forward.
As for what the Bears can do with their newfound cap savings, finding more help in the edge rusher department seems like it would be a good use of funds. And for what it’s worth, the team could roll over unused cap space into next offseason, where the team projects to need to clear $12,393,540 just to get under the cap according to OTC’s numbers.
