Corner Gallery in Ukiah to celebrate ‘Chromatic Aberrations’ photographs ...Middle East

Lech Slocinski is one of few artists who manifests the lucky combination of intense curiosity and total lack of fear. These interesting traits will be paired in his September show in the front windows of the Corner Gallery, where he will take a deep dive into a phenomenon known as “chromatic aberration.”

'My pictures are like markers in my own memory,' says Lech Slocinski. 'I can look at them and recall the feeling of the light that I saw back when I took the photo.' (Contributed)

Chromatic aberration is a technical term in photography, and it refers to an imperfection that most photographers want to avoid or get rid of. Lech explains, “Wavelengths of light (colors) refract or bend differently when they travel through the camera’s lens, and don’t focus at the same spot, which creates color fringes on edges of contrasting parts in the photo. It might be a blurring or a color distortion that photographers usually fix using Photoshop. But what if we take a different, quite opposite approach? Hence, I decided to explore the imperfections and see where they take me.”

Lech continues, “How do I interpret those imperfections? I don’t see anything negative in the words ‘aberration” or ‘imperfection.’ It’s all about what light does naturally. So I expand and use the term ‘chromatic aberration’ in plural form, to cover a broader creative front. I go from white through black, and through all the shades and saturations of hues to explore the spaces between them. I am really into looking at color… not to present reality, but to explore spaces.”

“My pictures are like markers in my own memory,” says Lech. “I can look at them and recall the feeling of the light that I saw back when I took the photo. It’s like a dream, since none of the places look ‘real’ after I get done with the photos. If you go to the exact place that I photographed, you won’t recognize it… you won’t see what I saw. That is because my pictures are never done when I take them… they are part of a process, a journey, which I never know how will end.”

Last time Lech did a show at the Corner Gallery, he was enthusiastically forging into an exploration of AI in photography. “And now,” he says, “I don’t know what’s going to be happening next. I’m on a journey to challenge myself. I want to try everything… portraits, landscapes, and abstractions… and explore how I can do them differently than other people have done. The pictures are everywhere I look, and all I need to ask myself is ‘How can I mess them up instead of just documenting scenes?’ That discovery is what fascinates me. I never dispose of bad pictures… some of them can be shaped into a piece of art that is really interesting. Unintended mistakes are a way of discovering good surprises if you are ready to be in the moment. If you can connect to the universe, things get revealed to you.”

The First Friday opening celebration for “Chromatic Aberrations” will be on Sept. 5 from 5-8 p.m. Live harp music will be presented throughout the evening by Suni Smith. The Corner Gallery is located at 201 S. State St. in Ukiah.
