Traditional Syrian fashions at Ministry of Culture’s pavilion at Damascus Int’l Fair ...Syria

DAMASCUS – As part of its participation in the 62nd Damascus International Fair, Syria’s Ministry of Culture is presenting a section dedicated to heritage fashion, highlighting traditional garments as symbols of national identity and folkloric pride.

The initiative is supervised by researcher Aida Dalati, who returned to Syria from the United States with a project aimed at reviving traditional crafts by supporting women artisans. Dalati has focused on empowering detainees’ wives and mothers of martyrs by organizing embroidery workshops that transform personal stories into textile art.

Organizers said the pavilion displays a variety of traditional costumes entirely handmade by Syrian women, with each embroidery pattern narrating a unique story.

Samia Al-Husseini, a member of the Culture Ministry’s organizing team, emphasized that the project strengthens women’s role while preserving Syria’s deep-rooted heritage. “These garments are more than clothing – they are narratives stitched into fabric,” she said.

The project also plans to establish permanent heritage fashion sections at the National Library and Azem Palace, providing lasting cultural spaces to safeguard and showcase Syria’s folkloric traditions for future generations.
