GORHAM, N.Y. — The massive fire that completely destroyed the Eco Operations LLC warehouse in Gorham is now out, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.
Crews from several departments were out at the Dewey Avenue site on Sunday, assisting with the cleanup effort.
Part of Dewey Avenue remained blocked off Sunday afternoon, so News10NBC’s Declan Stablow was unable to get close enough to see the damage — but you can still smell the smoke in the air and at times you can even still see it.
just down the road, spill management crews were working on cleaning up the creek that runs along Dewey Avenue — and the water has a certain oily look to it. The town of Gorham says it is aware of the hazard and had been working on a plan in the event a fire happened before the hazardous materials inside the building could be removed. There’s no word yet on what those materials were.
Daniel Bradley, who lives nearby, says he has never seen a fire like the one Saturday night that occupied firefighters from multiple departments for some 19 hours.
“I have witnessed bonfires; that would be the most substantial I’ve ever witnessed in my life — and this was just incredibly, significantly, exponentially much larger than that,” Bradley Sai. “At the magnitude, I was estimating the flames alone, maybe 75 to 100 feet in the air.”
The Town of Gorham says it’s still working with the state Department of Environmental Conservation, state Office of Fire Protection, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office to determine the cause.
The fire was brought under control in the early morning hours Sunday, according to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office. As of 1 p.m., Gorham firefighters had cleared the scene — a 57,000-square-foot warehouse on Dewey Avenue owned by Eco Operations LLC — and returned to the fire station, according to a Facebook post from the Town of Gorham.
“After 19 hours our firefighters are extremely tired and drained, but their jobs are not done yet. Now they have to clean, and put all of our equipment back in service and get it ready for our next call,” the post continued.
