Paul Finebaum and the rest of the SEC world watched on Saturday afternoon as the No. 8 Alabama Crimson Tide went to Tallahassee and left with a disappointing Week 1 loss to the unranked Florida State Seminoles.
Understandably, frustration is at an all-time high with Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer in Tuscaloosa on Sunday, and Finebaum echoed that sentiment during an appearance on ESPN’s SportsCenter.
Finebaum didn’t sugarcoat anything when discussing how disappointing this loss was for Alabama:
“It is downright terrible,” he said. “I’m in Alabama this morning and everywhere you go, people are up in arms and quite frankly, maybe overreacting. But it is really bad. Everyone bought into what Kalen DeBoer was selling this offseason. Recruiting was great. He retained the roster. The culture was different. Even Nick Saban told us that yesterday.
“Well, it looked like the same team we saw last year against Michigan and against Oklahoma and against Vanderbilt. That is the concern. He has a $70 million buyout. Nobody is eager to do that, but the upside is pretty weak right now and uphill for him. He has to get to the Playoff and right now, he is underwater in that regard.”
DeBoer needs to turn things around in Tuscaloosa in a hurry. In the next 2 weeks, Alabama hosts Louisiana-Monroe and Wisconsin. Then, the Tide get a week off and then head to Georgia for an absolutely massive SEC opener. All eyes will be on DeBoer these next 2 weeks as we see if the Tide are a team that can give Georgia a serious threat.
