The initial Chicago Bears practice squad roster members for the 2025 NFL season were announced on Wednesday, with one name missing from the bunch — Ian Wheeler.
It is a bit of a surprise not to see the running back’s name included on the list of Bears practice squad players. Between his preseason performance, the team’s need at the position, and General Manager Ryan Poles’ openness about how much he liked the player, I had to do a double-take when I didn’t see Ian Wheeler on the list of practice squad guys. It also made me think back and re-consider why Wheeler wasn’t playing in the preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs. Wheeler’s story was fun to follow. But now I’m starting to believe that his NFL story will have to have a second chapter with another franchise. Such is life in the NFL.

I am not totally surprised by second-year quarterback Austin Reed re-joining Chicago’s football team on its practice squad. However, I was expecting the team to bring in a young, developmental type of signal caller who is hand-picked by Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson. Given where this team is in its competitive window, it might make sense to carry just three QBs to keep the staff focused on Caleb Williams and Tyson Bagent without having to worry about a fourth quarterback who might need some molding. Maybe next year we’ll see the Bears find a late-round development flier.

It is worth noting that there are currently 15 players on the Bears’ practice squad. Teams can roster up to 16 players on the practice squad. That number can balloon to 17 if a team adds an International Pathway Player.
