Because August is a quiet month for hockey and the Blackhawks are celebrating their Centennial this coming season, we’ve been rolling through some of the franchise leaders from throughout the history of the franchise. Today, we’ll look at the best set-up guys in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Over the past few weeks as we’ve discussed the first century of Chicago Blackhawks hockey, we’ve looked at:
Franchise Rookie Records Calder Trophy Winners Four-Goal Periods for Blackhawks Skaters Hart Trophy Winners Franchise Goalie Records Vezina Trophy, Jennings Trophy Winners Norris Trophy Winners Franchise Scoring Records Art Ross Trophy WinnersIn the history of the NHL, exactly 20 players have recorded at least 900 regular-season assists in their career. Only four players, however, have accumulated at least 900 assists and only played for a single franchise: Steve Yzerman (Detroit – 1,063), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh – 1,062), Mario Lemieux (Pittsburgh – 1,033) and Stan Mikita (Blackhawks – 926).
Among the other 16 players to record at least 900 regular-season assists, two others — Paul Coffey and Doug Gilmour — had a cup of tea with the Blackhawks.
Patrick Kane (779) and Denis Savard (719) are the other two players in the history of the Blackhawks franchise to record over 555 helpers for the franchise.
Connor Bedard (83 career assists) currently ranks 107th in franchise history. However, if he records 42 assists (roughly his season average) in the coming season to reach 125 in his career, Bedard would jump all the way up into a tie with Roy Conacher, Kyle Calder and Keith Magnuson (whose number is retired) for 63rd in franchise history.
Single Game Record(s)
The record for assists in a single NHL game is seven — which has happened four times in the history of the league. Unfortunately, two of those four occasions came at the expense of the Blackhawks. Billy Taylor, Sr. of the Detroit Red Wings did it at the Chicago Stadium on March 16, 1947 and Wayne Gretzky — who is responsible for the other three seven-assist performances in NHL history — did it at the Chicago Stadium on December 11, 1985.
In the history of the league, there have been 27 games in which a player had six assists in a single game. The Blackhawks’ record of six was achieved by defenseman Pat Stapleton on March 30, 1969 — the final game of the regular season — at home against the Red Wings. In that game, Stapleton had assists on goals from Mikita (twice), Pit Martin (twice), Bobby Hull and Kenny Wharram.
Stapleton was a marvelous defenseman for the Blackhawks, finishing in the top-five in Norris Trophy voting three times and appearing in four All-Star Games on behalf of the franchise. He appeared in 545 regular-season games over eight seasons with the Hawks
