On Thursday, the International Swimming League (ISL) announced that the “All-Star Match” would be a competition between the United States, the Commonwealth, Europe, and the Rest of the World.
The organization announced on Wednesday that they would be returning in December with the “All-Star Match” in London nearly five years after the last meet they hosted, the final of its 3rd season in 2021.
The ISL website today was updated to show the team format stating:
“4 Teams. 96 Athletes.
The All-Star Match will be contested by four teams built on a geographical principle: the United States, the Commonwealth, Europe, and the Rest of the World. Each team is comprised of the leading athletes from its region, bringing the world’s best male and female swimmers together under four banners.”
With 96 athletes in total, each team will have a total of 24 swimmers, which is in line with the format we saw with the ISL back when it was first running with each team made up of 12 men and 12 women.
There are no official team rosters yet, but they are listed as “To Be Announced Soon” along with the tickets, format, and how to watch sections on the page.
The event is reportedly going to be a two-hour competition with the “largest prize pool ever offered for a single night of swimming.”
While we don’t know the exact teams yet, we did an analysis of the Pan Pacific Championships, European Championships, and Commonwealth Games as if they were one meet on SwimSwam earlier this month.
It is not a perfect representation because many Commonwealth athletes competed at the European Championships or Pan Pacs as well, winning medals at both, but it gives a rough idea of what a meet with this separation could look like.
With all the results combined, the Australian men (who will theoretically be part of the Commonwealth roster at the meet) would have won the most gold medals with four total across the individual events. Hungary (Europe) would have won three, and the United States would have walked away with two.
On the women’s side, the United States dominated with six events where they would have won the individual gold. Australia would have been 2nd with three golds and Great Britain (Commonwealth) would have been 3rd with two.
The United States also would have won five of the seven relay medals with Australia winning one (women’s 4×200 free relay) and the NAB delegation from Russia (Europe*) winning one (men’s 4×100 medley relay).
*The 2022 ISL season was canceled in part due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is not clear yet if Russian athletes will be eligible to compete at the ISL meet.
The meet will run about two weeks after the conclusion of the 2026 World Short Course Championships, which will wrap up on December 6th.
After the ISL cancelled the 2022 season, they made headlines because athletes had reportedly not received their payments from the 2021 season.
Earlier this summer, the ISL paid $3,000 in solidarity payments before sending out a letter outlining a plan to pay 100% of unpaid prize money from season 3 along with a form for athletes to fill out.
Enhanced Games participant Shane Ryan went back-and-forth with the ISL in the comment section of their latest Instagram post about the outstanding payments. The ISL replied to his comment, stating that he needed to fill out the form, and then they would begin processing his payments.
