With the announcement that the International Swimming League (ISL) is returning with an All-Star Match, set to take place in London this coming December, one of the big questions still circulating concerns payments to athletes from its prior seasons. One athlete in particular who has been very outspoken on this matter is former ISL swimmer and current Enhanced Games Athlete Shane Ryan.
Ryan told SwimSwam back in December of 2025 that the ISL still owed him $50,000 from the 2021 season. The ISL reportedly paid out $3,000 in solidarity payments in May, only scratching the surface of the amount that many athletes were still owed.
Ryan took to social media yesterday after the ISL announced its return to the sport, sharing his support for the return while still asking for the money owed to him. In response, the ISL replied to Ryan, saying that he was sent a form on July 5 (along with other athletes) that outlined the amount he was owed and required additional information prior to proceeding with payments.
That reply from the ISL also included a final statement: “We’re Waiting.”
The letters the athletes received back in May stated that the ISL would pay out its athletes’ prize money in four equal installments, totaling 100% of the amount owed.
That letter reads as follows:
This is a new chapter, and we want you to be a major part of it.
That spirit of partnership extends to how we address what is owed to you. We are pleased to confirm the following payment schedule for Season 3 Prize Money:
ISL will pay your outstanding prize money in four equal annual instalments, totaling 100% of the amount owed to you.
The first instalment of 25% will be paid by December 31st 2026, with subsequent instalments no later than December 31st 2027, December 31st 2028, and December 31st 2029 respectively.
We will endeavor to bring these payments forward if it is within our means to do so.
Ryan, a three-time Irish Olympian, announced back in October of 2025 that he would be coming out of retirement, a move he had announced one week earlier, to join the Enhanced Games.
The Enhanced Games have made several headlines, both for the use of enhancements and super suits, and for the amount of money its athletes can earn by competing.
At the inaugural Enhanced Games in May, Ryan came away with $200,000 in earnings after finishing 2nd in the 50 backstroke and adding a 3rd-place finish in the 100 free.
