Several customers reported buying a car from the dealership but never receiving the titles, which prevents them from using the vehicle after the tags expired, Atlanta News First reported.

“I feel kind of betrayed… It’s not fair. It’s frustrating,” customer Nick Jones said.

Jones had driven an hour and a half to pay cash for his 2017 Honda Pilot, but never received a title after his temporary tag expired.

He is still waiting for his title, but was able to get an extension on his temporary tag.

The Alliance Automotive Group in Marietta, Georgia, is a small high-mileage used car dealership that has received several reports from customers regarding the dealership’s failure to file paperwork.

Willie Lowe, a sanitation employee, told the outlet that he purchased a 2012 white Hyundai Equus from the dealership on June 7 for $8,900 cash.

Per Georgia law, the dealership is required to send over the title within one month of purchase, but weeks passed, and Lowe never received anything.

“There’s no way you should have 60 days without your title,” Lowe’s friend and coworker, Kellie Kindle, told Atlanta News First.

Lowe said he feels “mistreated” by the dealership.

Dan Sherrer, the owner of Alliance Automotive Group, claimed that Lowe had moved and failed to complete the proper paperwork for the title.

However, Jones and Lowe aren’t the only customers who have had this issue.

According to state records, two other customers had filed police reports, alleging that the company had never processed their paperwork.

Three title complaints were made to the Georgia Consumer Protection Division, while other title-related issues were made with the Better Business Bureau.

The Alliance Automotive Group was fined $2,500 in June by the Georgia Used Motor Vehicle Dealer Board for failing its inspection.

What to do if your dealer doesn't transfer a title

The Georgia Department of Revenue states:

If your temporary operating permit is about to expire and the dealer has not applied for your title, you may ask your local County Tag Office to issue a second temporary operating permit, which is good for an additional 30 days.  Motor vehicle dealers do not have the authority to extend the original 45-day temporary operating permit.

The failed inspection was partially due to title issues.

The dealership’s broker’s license was later suspended in July by the Secretary of State’s office.

A pending trial is scheduled for October, during which the dealership will attempt to regain its license.

Sherrer denied that the license was suspended, but a few days later, the gate was shut and cars were gone.

Car buyers are urged to research a dealership before buying a car second hand.

Buyers should at the very least ask to see a copy of the title before purchasing a car.
