The NFL’s three-game preseason is still relatively new. So much so that we still don’t know how teams will go about giving out playing time in the preseason finale. There simply isn’t enough of a sample to point out a pattern. But when it comes to the Chicago Bears and their preseason finale against the Kansas City Chiefs, we seem to have a pretty good idea about what will go down in Friday’s game. Well, at least when it comes to the starters.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune has more (via Twitter/X) on the Chiefs, whose head coach declared his starters will be on the field for the beginning of the final exhibition game against the Bears:
At his press conference today, Andy Reid told Kansas City media of his plan for starters on Friday night vs. #Bears:'They’ll start it off, for sure. And then we'll see how it goes from there.'Ben Johnson hinted last night at possibility he plays his starters as well.

In addition to sharing news that Kansas City is planning to play its starters in the preseason finale against Chicago, Biggs serves up a reminder that first-year Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson hinted at his team playing starters against the Chiefs, too. Following Johnson’s playing time management through the first two preseason games had me feeling like he was building up to give the regulars a shot at playing in Preseason Week 3. Perhaps we will get an extended look for the offensive starters, who played just two series before being pulled from the action.

Ben Johnson has a handful of practices between now and Friday’s kickoff to decide how his team will divvy up playing time against the Chiefs. However, I wonder if Chicago taking the field on Friday after playing on Sunday night will impact things. And if so, how? Again, there isn’t a blueprint for how to handle the preseason in 2025 because the three-game format is still relatively new. Plus, the Bears have a rookie head coach, which means all of this is uncharted waters for all of us.
