A big day for Clarendon Hills’ squad ended in disappointment, as they were blown out by the Summerlin South team in their opening Little League World Series game.
Even with the defeat, a large community gathering took place in the town of approximately 8,500 residents, with a large video screen displaying the game.
Residents watched as a Nevada-based team, representing the Mountain Region, poured on 11 sixth-inning runs to win a runaway 16-1 triumph in the opener Wednesday at Howard Lamade stadium in Pennsylvania.
Clarendon Hills did manage a run in the sixth on an interference call, but only managed five hits in their first-ever Little League World Series game.
Nevada raced out to an early lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI-single from Dustin Greusel, and they cruised from there behind the pitching of Garrett Gallegos as they advanced in the winner’s side of the bracket.
Fortunately for Clarendon Hills, their tournament is not done by any stretch. They will now play in the consolation side of the bracket on Saturday night, taking on the loser of Thursday’s game between Sioux Falls (South Dakota) and Glenmoore Eagle (Pennsylvania).
The Clarendon Hills team would need to continue winning to advance in the double-elimination tournament, with another loss knocking them out of the Little League World Series.
The team has experience bouncing back from tough losses too. During regional play earlier this month they were throttled by the West Side Little League team from Hamilton, Ohio by an 11-1 margin. Just two nights later, Clarendon Hills got revenge, beating the Ohio squad 9-4 to punch their ticket into the Little League World Series.
Saturday’s game will air on ESPN 2.
Back at home, the entire community is behind their Little League stars, hosting a watch party during Wednesday’s game.
“We decided to celebrate as a town so what we did is we rented a jumbotron, we blocked off some of the streets so we could create a little area here to safely watch the game,” town President Eric Tech said.
The community of approximately 8,500 residents was excited to see their team on the big stage, even in spite of the rough outcome.
“They’re amazing! It’s so cool to have a team from our town in the Little League World Series,” Eshan Bonthala said.
