Zoologist and animal conservationist turned author Delia Owens was 69 years old when she published her debut novel in 2018, Where the Crawdads Sing. In her previous life as a wildlife scientist, Owens had been subject to periods of extreme isolation where it was just herself, nature, and the creatures around her. This led her to be curious about how the natural world would influence human behavior, resulting in the subject matter of her debut piece of fiction.
In addition to her own life experience, which included over two decades of living in remote regions in Africa and Georgia, Owens also drew on other works of fiction, including Life of Pi, A Sudden Country, and Beloved. The resulting book became a story of two timelines set against the rugged backdrop of the marshes of North Carolina, not dissimilar to Owens’ own upbringing in rural Georgia.
Where the Crawdads Sing was overwhelmingly successful upon release in 2018, topping the New York Times bestseller list for weeks and being selected for Reese Witherspoon’s coveted book club. As of 2023, the book has sold over 18 million copies worldwide, making it one of the bestselling books of all time. These accolades, among others, have contributed to it being ranked near the top of Goodreads’ list of the “Biggest Hits of the Last Decade.”

In the book, Where the Crawdads Sing follows the life of Kya—at first a young girl witnessing her tumultuous family dynamic within the isolated marsh of North Carolina. When Kya’s mother abandons her and her alcoholic father, the latter of whom eventually also leaves a child-aged Kya to fend for herself. Kya becomes known as “The Marsh Girl” for being somewhat feral and illiterate and living amongst nature. She forms a relationship with Tate, who grows up with her and eventually leaves for college without saying goodbye. Several years later, the murder of another local boy rocks The Barkley Cove, where they all live. A combination of mystery and coming-of-age, Where the Crawdads Sing questions isolation, beauty, and the child that will never leave all of us.
