Cade Horton Made History Twice in that Dominant Start ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Cade Horton was as good as we’ve seen him yesterday against the Reds. Through 5.2 innings of work – which took him just 67 pitches and allowed the Cubs to steal some extra rest for him – Horton allowed just two hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked nobody. His 75 game score was his highest of the season, and the eye test said he was just really on one.

He also made some history.

With that scoreless start, Horton set a Cubs rookie record:

There was so much to like from the game, but how about this: Horton’s 83.6% strike rate in the game was the highest for ANY starting pitcher in ANY start this season. And it was the highest for ANY Cubs starting pitcher in ANY season since 2000!

He made so much history in that game!

His development and improvement throughout this season, at the highest level, has been one of the most impressive and important stories this season for me. He has worked in the zone most of the year without getting blown up because the stuff is so good, and over his last six starts, he’s really started to get more whiffs, too. His strikeout rate had been just 16.5%, but in these last six starts? It’s 20.5%. You want to see that kind of improvement from a guy like Horton, whose walk rate has held steady in that time.

Horton is down to a 3.18 ERA on the season over 79.1 innings, and seemingly should start to get at least a LITTLE down-the-ballot chatter in next month’s Rookie of the Year discussion. I don’t think he will necessarily win it this season, but hey, if he stays healthy and keeps improving the rest of the way, you never know.

“We want a healthy Cade Horton, a strong Cade Horton for the rest of the season." The 23-year-old knows the Cubs are watching his pitch count, so he has become 'fearless in the strike zone' + focused on effiiency. The strategy has, well, worked: t.co/OFgLFYU8GA
