Ben Johnson is Most Displeased With the Apparent Lack of Progress By the Bears’ Offense ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bears defense put on a show at Soldier Field during the team’s annual Family Fest event, and Head Coach Ben Johnson wasn’t happy about it.

Can you blame him?

“It was sloppy, sloppier than we were hoping we would be at this point,” Johnson said, via the tam’s official website. “We had a couple really good practices over the last two and then took us a little while to get going and hear the pads clicking. I thought toward the end we picked it up and it got pretty competitive there.”

As Madison underscored in her Sunday notes, Bears Family Fest was dominated by the defense. And as Ben Johnson mentions above, it was a sloppier showing than you might otherwise expect for a practice at this time of year.

Having an offensive series that featured two delay-of-game penalties and more incompletions (3) than completions (2) is unsettling. For what it’s worth, things ended on a high note for the Bears’ offense. Wrapping up the session with a touchdown pass from quarterback Caleb Williams to rookie tight end Colston Lovelnd in the two-minute drill is something I hope the offense carries over into practices this week as the team prepares for its first game week of the 2025 football season.

What’s next for Ben Johnson and the Bears offense?

The Bears have had 10 training camp practices, including five with pads. So, yeah, I can understand why Head Coach Ben Johnson is miffed after a sloppy showing by the offense. To be clear, I don’t think the first-year head coach believes this unit should be clicking on all cylinders at this point on the calendar. Even if the offense looked good on Sunday, there was still work to be done in the days and weeks ahead of the team’s Week 1 regular-season opener against the Minnesota Vikings. But this group has further to go than it should. That irks me. So I can only begin to imagine how it makes Johnson feel.

More notable quotes from the Bears’ first-year head coach:

On the delay-of-game problems: “It’s something we’re going to have to address for sure. This was more like a real game, and if it continues like that, we’re not going to win many games.” Tipping his cap to the defense after it created a safety: “A safety is inexcusable. Execution of the play wasn’t what we wanted to be. It’s a credit to the defense. They kicked the offense’s rear in that. They wanted it a little bit more.” On eliminating repeat mistakes: “I know the saturation level has gotten there with these guys. They’re pretty filled-up to the brim with information. At the same time, the installs are slowing down, so we do expect the execution to be a little bit cleaner as we go from here on out.”

EARLIER: BEN JOHNSON SOUNDS OFF ON PRE-SNAP ISSUES

I’ll say this about Ben Johnson: I appreciate how blunt he has been when discussing the shortcomings of this offense. In previous years, we’d hear coaches swear that things were looking good at practice, only to see that it was just lip service because those practice gains weren’t carrying over into regular-season games. The primary purpose of practicing is to get better for game day. Given what the head coach said above, the Bears clearly need more time on the practice field before they will be ready for prime time.

Thankfully, there are still 35 days between now and when the Bears’ first game of consequence kicks off on Monday Night Football against one of their chief NFC North rivals — the Minnesota Vikings.
