We are nearing the halfway point of the 2026 European Championships in Paris and we have already seen a slew of championship records, European records, and national records fall. Day 3 is expected to bring more of this excitement.
We begin with heats of the women’s 200 free, where Great Britain’s Freya Colbert, who comes in as top seed, will meet red-hot Marrit Steenbergen of Netherlands and Czech Republic’s Barbara Seemanova, the defending champion. Steenbergen, the World Record holder in the 100 free, won that event on Day 2, taking a huge chunk out of the Championship Record. She’s in terrific form and could spoil Colbert’s and Seemanova’s party.
The men’s 50 fly final and the mixed medley relay on Day 2 may have given us a preview of what we can expect in the men’s 100 fly this morning. France’s Maxime Grousset looks to have come back from his broken foot even stronger. He’s got Caeleb Dressel’s World Record in his crosshairs and this meet could be the occasion. Noe Ponti of Switzerland, defending champion Kristof Milak (Hungary), and 50 fly champ Egor Kornev (Neutral Athletes B) are also contenders.
The women’s 50 back will be an exciting matchup among top-seeded Sara Curtis of Italy, France’s Mary-Ambre Moluh, who broke the European Record in the 100 back leading off the French mixed medley relay, and Great Britain’s Lauren Cox. Steenbergen is also entered in this event, as is defending champion Danielle Hill of Ireland.
Commonwealth Games gold medalist Filip Nowacki is the favorite in the men’s 200 breast, but Neutral Athletes B’s Kirill Prigoda and Caspar Corbeau of the Netherlands come in with seed times that could very well see them through to the top of the podium.
The women’s 4×100 free relay heats will wrap up the session. With all but 4 teams guaranteed a spot in finals, we may not an see intensely fought prelims, but fireworks should fly at night in the final. The Dutch are the heavy favorites; not only do they bring World Record holder Steenbergen, but the depth of their sprint group is impressive. In the 100 free individual event on Day 1, Steenbergen and Milou van Wijk qualified 1-2 out of heats, Imani de Jong was 8th, and Yara van Kalmthout finished 11th. Italy was the only other country with more than 2 in the top 16. France, Neutral Athletes B, Czech Republic, Great Britain, and Italy all have a shot at the podium.
