With there being little/no hockey happening in August, and the Blackhawks celebrating their centennial season in the coming year, we’re going to spend some time this month looking back at the history of the franchise. We’ll look at some unique NHL records, franchise records and Blackhawks who collected some individual hardware along the way.

The Blackhawks rebuild is in full swing, and they’ll have some impressive young players make their NHL debuts in the coming years. Over the years, the organ-I-zation has had a terrific history that includes some of the best rookie seasons in the history of the NHL. And some of those players have been named the best player in their respective rookie classes.

Only ten goaltenders in the history of the NHL have won the Calder Trophy — and four of them were Chicago Blackhawks. And only 11 rookies in the history of the NHL have scored at least 43 goals — one of them was a Blackhawk.

Here are the ten Blackhawks who have won the Calder Memorial Trophy, which is awarded each year to the NHL’s rookie of the year.

1935-36 — Mike Karakas, G48 games played, 21-19-8, 1.85 GAA

1937-38 — Cully Dahlstrom, C48 games played, 10 goals, 9 assists** Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup in 1938

1954-55 — Ed Litzenberger, C44 games played, 16 goals, 24 assists — for Chicago73 games played, 23 goals, 28 assists — total** Litzenberger was traded to the Blackhawks by the Canadiens in the middle of his rookie season.

1959-60 — Bill Hay, C70 games, 18 goals, 37 assists

1969-70 — Tony Esposito, G63 games played, 38-17-8, 2.75 GAA, .919 save pct** Esposito also won the Vezina Trophy and was the runner-up for the Hart in his rookie season.

Keith Magnuson finished third in voting following the 1969-70 season.

1982-83 — Steve Larmer, RW80 games played, 43 goals, 47 assists

1990-91 — Ed Belfour, G74 games played, 43-19-7, 2.47 GAA, .910 save pct** Belfour also won the Vezina Trophy and Jennings Trophy in his rookie season

2007-08 — Patrick Kane, RW82 games played, 21 goals, 51 assists

Jonathan Toews finished third in voting following the 2007-08 season.

2015-16 — Artemi Panarin, LW80 games played, 30 goals, 47 assists

2023-24 — Connor Bedard, C68 games played, 22 goals, 39 assists
