A man facing first-degree murder charges after telling police he shot and killed his girlfriend late last year, according to an arrest affidavit, is set to stand trial in January after pleading not guilty in Weld County District Court last week.

Gabriel Esparza, 24, is accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend, Sierra Nicole Mininger, on Dec. 8 in the 300 block of 9th Avenue in Greeley.

He faces charges of first-degree murder and possession of a weapon by a previous offender, according to Colorado court records. He is being held at the Weld County Jail on $5 million bond.

Esparza was previously convicted of illegally discharging a firearm after he and two others reportedly carried out a pair of drive-by shootings in October 2020.

Esparza’s possibly seven-day trial is slated to start Jan. 12. Ahead of that trial, he is set to appear Sept. 26 for a motions hearing and Dec. 12 for a pre-trial readiness conference.
