Few swimmers were more impressive this summer than Australian star Sam Short, who swept the 400, 800, and 1500 freestyles at both the Commonwealth Games and the Pan Pacific Championships. Now the focus has shifted to the short course pool, where he will look to earn what he couldn’t this summer: a world record.
Short competed at the Australian National Short Course Championships earlier this month and did exactly what he does best: win.
He won gold in the 400 free (3:35.16), 800 free (7:25.55), and 1500 free (14:15.10). Those performances showed he hasn’t lost a step from his summer sizzler, swimming lifetime bests at those national championships.
In an interview with AAP News, Short touched on the longstanding 400 free world record and said he hopes to take down the near 15-year-old mark of 3:32.25 set by Yannick Agnel at the French Short Course Championships in 2012.
“I think that’s gone in a couple of months at world short course,” Short said about the current 400 free World Record in an AAP News report. “I haven’t swum much short course… in some ways it keeps you hungry.”
At first glance, Short’s attempt to take down this world record seems realistic, especially with top-tier competition in December at the Short Course World Championships in Beijing. However, he still sits about three seconds off that time.
In the all-time performers ranking, Short still sits outside of the top 11 all-time in the event.
Top 400 Freestyle Performers All-Time (SCY)
Yannick Agnel – 3:32.25 (2012) Danas Rapsys – 3:33.20 (2019) Peter Bernek – 3:33.20 (2014) Kieran Smith – 3:34.38 (2022) Duncan Scott – 3:34.46 (2024) Grant Hackett – 3:34.58 (2002) Tae Hwan Park – 3:34.59 (2016) Ian Thorpe – 3:34.63 (2003) Zhang Lin – 3:34.66 (2009) Peter Vanderkaay – 3:34.81 (2009) Tommy Neill – 3:35.05 (2022) Sam Short – 3:35.16 (2026)Only two other swimmers this season have been within a second of Short’s Aussie National Championship time: Belgium’s Lucas Henveaux and Carson Foster, who both notched 3:36-lows during the World Cup, with Henveaux clocking 3:36.01 in Kazakhstan and Foster throwing down 3:36.07 in Baku.
Many swim fans will hope Short gets to race some of these top talents in Beijing, and from the way he looked this summer and earlier this month, He may be in for another massive performance, one that could secure his first individual world record.
