'Robo cop' on patrol in Dublin ...Middle East

DUBLIN, Ohio (WCMH) -- The Dublin Police Department is using new technology to increase its presence across the city.

A robot called DubBot is officially on duty, having joined the police force last Friday.

“It's a force multiplier,” Dublin Police Department Sgt. Joshua Kirby said. “It gives us the ability to allocate our resources appropriately so that we're not spread, then we're not doing things that we don't need to do. And so it takes some of the work off of officers to be here physically.”

Kirby said DubBot is programmed to patrol the Rock Cress parking garage. He said DubBot is always recording.

“At the top, you've got a Lidar device,” Kirby said. “So this is a device that’s scanning the environment here, so that's what helps navigate it. You have the 360 cameras here around the top that's giving us that additional coverage.”

DubBot has strobes and lights to alert people they are being watched. He said if DubBot’s system sees something out of the ordinary, the department will be alerted.

“Say if there's a gathering of five or more people, then it's going to notify their monitoring center,” Kirby said. “Then they can either send it to go send a message to say, ‘Hey, you need to go, you know, enjoy the environment rather than hanging out in the parking garage,’ or they may escalate it and then contact police for us to respond.”

Kirby said if someone needs help, all they have to do is press the button for assistance and they can communicate with police through DubBot.

“I just think a giant cell phone essentially of dispatch, can talk to the individual and the individual can talk through the robot through a microphone and to communicate whatever they may need,” Kirby said.

DubBot will be getting a friend named Bridge Walker this fall. Bridge Walker will be a second robot patrolling the Riverside Crossing Park and Dubin Link Bridge.

The two robots are costing the city of Dublin $238,440 as part of a two-year pilot program.
