Nearly 500 flights headed in and out of Denver International Airport on Wednesday were delayed amid afternoon thunderstorms.
As of 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, a ground delay traffic management program was in effect at the Denver airport, causing average delays of 1 hour and 21 minutes, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
At that time, 461 flights had been delayed and five had been canceled, according to flight tracking data from FlightAware.
The FAA-issued ground delay is expected to last through 10 p.m. Wednesday, with the length of delays increasing after 4 p.m., agency officials said.
Southwest delayed the most flights Wednesday at 223, followed by 89 from United and 42 from SkyWest. More than a dozen other airlines delayed between one and 15 flights.
United canceled three flights and Southwest canceled two, according to FlightAware.
