Outdoor enthusiasts of all walking abilities are invited to a walk in the Jackson Demonstration State Forest near Fort Bragg Tuesday.
Called “All About Banana Slugs,” the walk is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. July 22, and is the latest in the monthly walk/rolls hosted by Leslie Krongold of Leslie’s Accessible Walks.
Sara Ahlich, a community education specialist with the Universtiy of California’s Cooperative Extension in Mendocino County, said Krongold “came to us with the idea of a banana slug walk,” noting that “there are definitely plenty of banana slugs in Jackson Demonstration State Forest, (as) they live on the floors of moist/cool forests, which is exactly the environment that redwood forests provide. I’ve spent the last few weeks in JDSF and came across banana slugs of all sizes!”
Krongold said she “loves having guides” for the walks she hosts, and was “thrilled to partner with the Cal Fire JDSF” for the walk/roll Tuesday.
When asked to share one of her favorite facts about banana slugs, she said, “I think the simplest, most interesting factoid for me is that banana slugs are hermaphrodites,” adding that: “Biologist Robert Douglas will lead the walk/roll and have more interesting banana slug tales.”
And for those who need a bit more of an enticement than seeing actual banana slugs, Krongold pointed out that “my partner and I baked banana slug cookies for the event, (but) no slugs were harmed.”
