Elton John is enjoying the holiday season with a brand new version of a classic song he originally released in 1973.
The EGOT winner (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony) released a remix of “Step Into Christmas” on Thursday, November 5, featuring new vocals by Irish singer-songwriter CMAT (born Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson).

John, 79, wrote the original song with his long-time collaborator, lyricist Bernie Taupin, as a thank-you gift to his fans. Now 53 years later, he’s kept the original’s lively rock ’n’ roll rhythm and joyful singalong chorus, while bringing a fresh feel with Thompson’s vocals.
“I’ve loved CMAT since I first heard her and saw her videos years ago. She has this incredible personality, and a wicked sense of humor,” the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer said. “You can tell she has rock n’ roll and country and Americana at the heart of what she does — we’re kindred spirits in so many ways. And that’s why I was so thrilled with the idea of us collaborating on ‘Step Into Christmas.’ She’s done an amazing job.”

“Step into Christmas” was certified platinum, and later included as a bonus track on the 1995 remastered reissue of the album Caribou. It also appears on Elton John’s Christmas Party (2005), Rare Masters (1992), the four-disc box set To Be Continued… (1990), and the greatest hits album Diamonds (2017).
Now John is adding a new 2026 flavor to the track with CMAT, who was thrilled to work with the legend.
“When I listen to the music of Elton John, I am seven-years-old in the back of my mom’s car. It doesn’t matter how old or famous I become — whenever I listen to Elton John, I will always be seven years old in the back of my mom’s car,” CMAT, 30, commented. “Reconciling this feeling with the reality of getting to work with the man in question has been confusing, to say the least, but the greatest joy of my life.”
