ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Age doesn’t have a limit for guys who just want to have fun. At the Rochester Softball Association’s fifth annual Hall of Fame Game Saturday, the event celebrated the joy of playing softball, regardless of age.

“In the morning you get up and you say, boy I really don’t feel like playing. And you get out here and it’s like, yeah I do want to play now,” Al Malavase said.

The players were not focused on the score.

“The senior softball community is far more than just softball. It’s more than softball. It’s a brotherhood,” Denny Warren said.

“This is like a camaraderie thing, a group. We’re all like brothers, really,” Malavase said.

Malavase, who is 91 years old, has no plans to stop playing, saying you go as long as you can.

“We have a little saying that you don’t get old because you play, you get old because you don’t play,” Warren said.

When not playing softball, Malavase enjoys performing magic tricks.

“I do magic at the Christmas parties,” Malavase said. “The good thing about these old guys is they forget, so I can repeat the tricks the next year.”

That earned him the nickname “Magic” but you could also call him a trickster. Malavase shared a story about running into Mickey Mantle and being mistaken for the baseball legend by some teenage girls who insisted on an autograph. He obliged with a fake signature.

Obviously, a real autograph from Mantle would be worth a ton, but just sitting with Malavase through a game is worth it on its own. He’s been playing for four decades and appreciates the simple weekend mornings with his friends the most.

“As insecure as I am sometimes. When I’m out there, I’m pretty solid,” Malavase said.

The Hall of Fame Game provided another memorable day for Malavase and his softball brotherhood.
