Greeley-Evans School District 6 will give away 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies at its 12th annual School Kickoff Community Celebration in August.
District 6, in partnership with the Success Foundation, will host its School Kickoff Community Celebration from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Island Grove Event Center, 501 N. 14th Ave., Greeley.
The backpack giveaway will begin at 9 a.m., according to a District 6 news release. The giveaway benefits students, preschool and up, who are registered in the district and attend the back-to-school event. Students will have backpack and supply choices that correspond to their grade level — elementary, middle and high school.
Volunteers working the event will confirm that students’ names are on the registration lists before handing over a ticket to receive a backpack. A ticket guarantees a backpack.
If a name does not appear on the list, families must register at the event before their children receive a backpack.
Upon entering the event, students will also receive food bags while supplies last. Students must consume meals on the event’s grounds.
More than 60 community booths will provide “information, services and entertainment for students and their families,” . Resources available to District 6 students at the event include free haircuts, free vaccinations and low-cost sports registration and physicals.
The event will also feature a petting zoo provided by FFA students from Greeley West High School, carnival games and tours of vehicles like a District 6 school bus, a Greeley-Evans Transit bus, a fire truck and more, the release said.
The district asks all attendees to leave their pets at home. Only service animals are allowed in the backpack line or inside the event center.
More than 150 volunteers help make this event possible, from handing out backpacks to keeping the traffic flowing. Thanks to sponsorships and donations from the community, the district raised money for the backpack and supplies.
