The Denver Broncos are not making any changes or considering any type of change at the quarterback position, despite Bo Nix’s struggles and national calls for the team to do so.

Denver’s focus is on establishing more offensive balance, which Sean Payton believes will improve QB play.

There’s been a lot of calls from national analysts for Denver to make a quarterback change and bench Bo Nix, but that’s not what Sean Payton is even considering, and rightfully so.

Let’s be clear — Nix is struggling, and he’s in a slump right now, but the Broncos aren’t letting this slump erase what they’ve seen from him in his first two seasons.

Since drafting Nix, the Broncos have not had a competent rushing attack, and this year their offensive line effectiveness hasn’t been great. There are multiple factors impacting Denver’s offense, and it’s not solely Nix.

That’s not to absolve Nix of his struggles this season, but this game is complex, and the parts that make up the team are just as important as having a quarterback. Internally, the Broncos believe that Nix will break out of his slump, and that’s the message I’ve gotten talking to players in the locker room — they still believe in Nix.

“To answer your question, no,” Payton said. “He’s going to become the byproduct of all the finer things that get improved. The improved play from our offensive line, the more efficient we are relative to balance, running the football. That’s our jobs as coaches here. We talked after the game about we’re excited to get that win, and yet at the same time find that improvement we need in all areas. So, it starts with all of us.”

In other words, Payton is acknowledging that Bo is struggling, while also pointing out that the offensive line isn’t playing to standard, and that the run game is a bit unbalanced right now. Improving in those two areas typically helps alleviate pressure off the quarterback’s shoulders.

Despite their struggles, the Broncos came out of a six-game gauntlet at 4-2, and Sunday’s game against the Cardinals won’t be a cakewalk.

“I think it’s a little bit of our league,” Payton said. “In other words, it gets back to those challenging weeks that I talk about in the offseason. Fortunately, we’re sitting here at 4-2. We’ve got a chance to play better this upcoming weekend, and we will. I think that part of that is when you’re not getting first downs, and I think the body language is important and I think that this is another week where our attention to detail—all those things, it has to improve. We understand that, so we’re anxious to get back to work.”
