Sun Yang, whom many fans remember as a dominant force for China in the pool, has now taken his talents to open water, competing in a 10km race in Guizhou, China.
Sun was seen in an Instagram post wearing a full-body open water suit and diving into the 10km race. According to an Instagram post, Sun was the only male swimmer at the meet to be born in the 1990s, competing at age 35.

Sun never fails to make headlines, whether in the water or not. We last saw him racing at the Chinese National Championships (LCM) in June, where he swam the 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, and 800 free, plus a pair of relays.
His best individual finish of the meet came in the 400 free, where he finished 4th in 3:49.39; his only other top-8 finish came in the 200 free, where he touched in 1:47.19.
Sun’s appearance in open water may lead to him becoming another decorated pool swimmer who makes the move to open water. Other notable athletes who have/had made the transition include Germany’s Florian Wellbrock, who in 2019 became the first swimmer to win both the 1500 free and 10 km open water events at the same World Championships; he also added a 2020 Olympic Gold in Tokyo in the 10km. He won all four open water events at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore.
Gregorio Paltrinieri has long been a staple of Italian distance swimming, in both the pool and open water. Before moving to open water, he won Olympic gold in the 1500 free in Rio in 2016. He then won a silver medal in the 10km at the Tokyo Olympics and added a 10km World title in 2022.
Sun’s career includes three Olympic golds and 11 individual World Championship titles; even at 35, this could be an interesting development in Sun’s story.
