After a less-than-ideal summer season by his standards, Adam Peaty has opened up about his season, particularly what may have affected his performances.

In an interview with The Sun, Peaty touched on one key factor that kept him from topping the podium at either the Commonwealth Games or the European Championships for the first time in his career: his muscle mass.

“What I have learned from Europeans and Commonwealths this summer, without going too deep, I had too much muscle. So that’s another thing as well that I’ve been assigned to do – to try and reduce the muscle mass a little bit.” Peaty said in the report from The Sun. “Because every stroke you potentially carry another four kilograms, which isn’t ideal over 42 or 43 strokes over 100 meters. You look at the power-to-weight ratio. That’s kind of another conversation that we’ll get into later.”

Earlier this year, Peaty suffered a broken finger. This injury, he admitted, affected his “discipline” in some aspects of his racing, which may have contributed to his absence on the top of the podium, despite his confidence after the British nationals early in the season.

“We pushed a little bit too far on the load in the pool, especially in the gym, which has really affected the drag profile but also the shapes I can hold under the water,” Peaty said.

The Sun reported that Peaty has been splitting his training time between the London Aquatics Center and Kensington, with additional sessions in the gym in Battersea, Stratford, and Wimbledon.

Peaty remains the fastest sprint breaststroker in history, holding the long-course 50 and 100 breaststroke titles with times of 25.95 and 56.88, respectively. In 2024, Peaty took about 10 months out of the water after testing positive for COVID-19 at the Paris Olympics and citing burnout.

Fans worldwide are waiting to see whether the British breaststroke superstar can ever return to the near-untouchable speed that made him one of the sport’s must-see talents.
