(UNC Athletics).Johnson’s nomination to the Good Works Team marks the second time in recent months a UNC athlete has been recognized for community service. In the spring, baseball player Tony Castonguay was one of three finalists for the inaugural Tony Gywnn Community Service Trophy. Castonguay, who completed his eligibility this year, founded and operates a nonprofit advocating for students with special needs.
“I’ve been a part of this team, and these players aren’t just showing up, they’re standing out,” said Sam Acho, an ESPN college football analyst, former NFL linebacker, author and 2010 Good Works Team member. “Their commitment to service creates lasting change and inspires the next generation.”
Acho was also a recipient of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy, which honors service, academics and athletic performance. Allstate and the Wuerffel Foundation have partnered for a second year to align or link two of college football’s most meaningful awards: selection to good works and the Wuerffel Trophy.
The trophy was named for former University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, a Heisman Trophy and member of the College Football Hall of Fame.
“When nearly 200 young athletes choose to serve, it creates a ripple effect far beyond the game,” Wuerffel said in the AFCA news release. “Their leadership in the community is just as worthy of recognition as their performance on the field.”
