Fighting resumed at dawn on Monday, July 14, in villages across western rural Suwayda, southern Syria, as local factions repelled advances by armed groups attempting to push in from western Daraa countryside.
According to Suwayda24, a local news outlet covering the province, armed clashes broke out between attacking forces and local factions near several western villages. The attackers reportedly approached the village of Kanaker, west of Suwayda city.
The escalation follows renewed violence that began on Sunday and continued into early Monday, with civilians in the area appealing for safe passage as many attempted to flee to safer regions, according to Enab Baladi’s correspondent in the province.
The fighting resumed after a brief period of calm early Monday morning, which followed an Interior Ministry announcement that it had begun intervening to end the clashes. The ministry had also reported the release of all hostages from both Suwayda and local tribes.
In a statement on Facebook, the Interior Ministry said that units from its forces, in coordination with the Ministry of Defense, were initiating direct operations to halt the conflict, restore security, apprehend those responsible, and refer them to the judiciary to prevent future tragedies and uphold the rule of law.
As of the latest tally, at least 30 people were killed and 80 others wounded in Suwayda, according to Alrased News. Six Syrian army personnel were also reportedly killed during the intervention to halt the clashes.
To de-escalate the violence, several local figures—most notably Sheikh Hikmat al-Hijri, Sheikh Yusuf Jerboa, and tribal elders—facilitated the release of detained tribal youths who had been held in al-Maqous neighborhood. Their arrest had followed an armed robbery incident on the Damascus–Suwayda highway on Saturday, which sparked the latest round of unrest.
On Sunday evening, the village of al-Tira in western Suwayda witnessed a security flare-up when armed groups entered the area, setting homes ablaze and committing acts of vandalism. The village was later brought under the control of the “Men of Dignity” movement.
According to Alrased, most residents of al-Tira fled to nearby al-Mazraa and Suwayda city, while local fighters remained in the village to protect civilian property.
Armed groups also targeted the towns of Sma’a and al-Mazraa with mortar fire, while clashes erupted near the villages of Labeen and Haran.
Simultaneously, gunmen attacked the al-Sura al-Kabira checkpoint belonging to the Internal Security Forces, blocked the Damascus–Suwayda road, and shelled the village with mortar rounds. The confrontation escalated into open fighting between police units, local residents, and the attackers.
Tensions had already begun building early Saturday morning, July 12, when local groups mobilized along the Damascus–Suwayda highway following an assault on a civilian and the theft of his belongings.
According to Suwayda24, the incident involved an ambush by unidentified gunmen who intercepted a young man named Fadlallah Duwara,a small-scale vegetable seller, near the village of Kharbat al-Shiyab, south of Damascus. He had been driving a vegetable-laden truck back to Suwayda.
Sources close to Fadlallah said the assailants robbed him of his truck (which carried around five tons of vegetables), his mobile phone, and 7 million Syrian pounds (approx. $700 at market rate). They also abducted him for several hours, transported him to a remote area about five kilometers off the road, and subjected him to physical torture, sectarian abuse, and death threats.
The attackers eventually released him after stealing his belongings. He was able to reach a road and was helped by a passerby to reach a hospital in Suwayda.
