Despite a 29-point showing from freshman Kate Harpring, UNC fell 72-68 at No. 20 Maryland in its final exhibition game of the preseason.
Harpring paced the Tar Heels on offense, as only one other teammate reached double figures: sophomore Nyla Brooks, who scored 14. Harpring took more than a third of UNC’s field goal attempts (22 of 61) and showcased her all-around capability with six rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block in her 37 minutes of action. She ended the afternoon as Carolina’s leading rebounder.
Nevertheless, Maryland controlled the glass against the Tar Heels with a 44-33 rebounding advantage. Carolina had a hard time stopping senior forward and Stanford transfer Nunu Agara, who finished with a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds. Half of Agara’s points came in the first quarter.
UNC trailed 19-16 after that first quarter, but nine points from Harpring in the second helped the Tar Heels lead 33-32 at halftime. The game was tied at 48-48 late in the third before the Terrapins’ Rainey Welson drained consecutive three-pointers in the period’s final minute. Maryland led 54-48 entering the fourth quarter.
The Tar Heels kept it close in the fourth but never led, cutting the deficit to 58-57 with 6:04 remaining but getting no closer. Harpring knocked down a three with 37 seconds to go to bring UNC within 70-68 and then missed a shot to tie the game with four seconds remaining. Maryland’s Addi Mack then made two free throws to seal the Terps’ exhibition win.
UNC is now done with its preseason schedule. The Tar Heels will open the 2026-27 regular season Monday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern time at the Adidas Arena in Paris against No. 21 Oklahoma. The game is part of the “Oui Play” event and will be televised on ESPN2.
