A driver is presumed dead and recovery efforts were suspended for the day after a tractor trailer cab fell off the Delaware Memorial Bridge into the water below in New Castle County, Delaware, officials said.
According to the Delaware River and Bay Authority, around 3:40 a.m. on Friday, July 11, a Bobtail Tractor traveling southbound on the Delaware Memorial Bridge into Delaware crossed three lanes of traffic, onto the concrete pad near the Delaware anchorage, and crashed into a concrete wall.
Officials said the vehicle’s impact collapsed the concrete wall, and the tractor trailer cab careened into the Delaware River.
The accident occurred on the downslope of the Delaware-bound bridge. No other vehicles were impacted, according to officials.

Officials located the truck in around 20 feet of water shortly before noon but have not found the driver. Around 4:30 p.m., they suspended search and recovery efforts for Friday due to tide and water conditions in the area. They also said the driver was presumed dead. Officials have not yet determined the identity of the driver or if more than one person was inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.
All lanes on the bridge were reopened to traffic late Friday afternoon. A maintenance attenuator vehicle was placed on the concrete pad near the collapsed concrete wall as a safety precaution.
