England vs Wales Prediction: Women’s Euro 2025 Preview ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

It’s a battle between two British sides on Sunday, with England looking to get a positive result in St Gallen to progress to the Women’s Euro 2025 knockout stage. We preview the clash with our England vs Wales prediction.

England vs Wales Stats: The Key Insights

The Opta supercomputer fancies England to beat Wales in this match, with the Lionesses winning 75.8% of pre-game simulations. Sarina Wiegman will set a new Women’s European Championship record if she leads England to victory in this game, looking for a 14th victory at the tournament as coach. Wales have not won any of their 10 previous meetings with England in all competitions.

A reaction was needed from England following their Matchday 1 defeat to France, and a 4-0 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday was certainly one way to react. That result has given the English confidence in their ability to retain their Women’s European Championship title, such was their dominance against one of the stronger teams at this tournament.

England must at least match the result of the Netherlands on MD 3 to ensure they qualify for the knockout stages at a sixth consecutive major tournament, having last exited at the group stage at Euro 2013.

The victory over her home nation last week was Sarina Wiegman’s 14th as a coach at the Women’s European Championship, and a win over Wales on Sunday would set a new outright record in the competition. What is not in doubt is that she will equal the record of taking charge of a 15th game in the tournament, drawing her level with both Hope Powell and Tina Theune.

Wiegman made a big call with her starting XI against the Dutch, dropping Beth Mead to the bench and replacing her in the starting XI with Ella Toone. The Manchester United attacking midfielder scored in the 4-0 win, alongside further goals from Georgia Stanway and the excellent Lauren James (2).

James has now been directly involved in 16 goals across her 14 competitive starts for England in all competitions (8 goals, 8 assists), including eight in just five major-tournament starts (World Cup/Euros – 5 goals, 3 assists).

Alessia Russo didn’t score against the Netherlands, but she did assist three of their goals, meaning she’s been involved in six goals in her last four appearances for England (two goals, four assists).

Wales will have to do something they’ve never done before if they are to cause a shock in this match: beat England in a women’s fixture. England are unbeaten in all 10 of their previous meetings with the Welsh across all competitions (W9 D1), scoring 37 times and conceding just twice.

Wales’ recent form won’t give them much confidence of achieving a shock. They remain winless in each of their eight competitive fixtures in 2025 (D2 L6), last having a longer run without victory in such matches between May 2007 and September 2009 (9 in a row).

Their only goal at the Euros this summer so far came in the 4-1 defeat to France last Wednesday, when Jess Fishlock became the oldest goalscorer in UEFA Women’s European Championship history – also the Dragons’ first ever goal in the competition. The only player to net both of her nation’s first two goals at the tournament is France’s Angélique Roujas (first four games in 1997).

England vs Wales Prediction

England are strong favourites to win this game, which will secure their place in the quarter-final of the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament. The Opta supercomputer saw them win in 75.8% of the 10,000 pre-game simulations, with Wales winning just 10.2% of the time.

Following their sensational 4-0 win over the Netherlands on MD 2, the Lionesses are now widely expected to progress from Group D alongside France. Their current chances of progression are rated at 90.9% with the supercomputer, just behind France (97.3%), but importantly, well ahead of the Dutch (11.7%).
