The Hollywood actor once embellished the truth to land the leading role of Invincible.

Mark Wahlberg never played football. He’ll tell you that (now).

The man who starred in 2006’s Invincible had to lie if he were to be cast as Vince Papale.

Based on a true story, the film follows Papale, who, at 30 years old, tried out for the Philadelphia Eagles and, against all odds, made the team and played for them from 1976 to 1978.

Wahlberg is famously a Boston sports fan, most notably a New England Patriots and Red Sox fan, and has even teased entering the realm of NFL ownership with his old pal Tom Brady and the Las Vegas Raiders.

So he wasn’t clueless when he played the part of Papale, he just didn’t have experience playing football before.

“I lied. I said I played college football,” Wahlberg confessed to Radio Free while promoting the movie back in 2006.

“Obviously I had never gone to college, I never played high school football. But I played football in the neighborhood. I played every sport, but we didn’t play with equipment.

“The first time I ever put on equipment was in an NFL uniform, which was pretty cool.”

When asked if he knew Papale’s story before reading the script, Wahlberg gave an honest answer this time.

“I’m a big football buff, [but] I didn’t know the Vince Papale story until I was sent the script and I saw a 90-second piece that a friend of his [put together for] NFL films,” Wahlbrerg said.

“I was blown away. It’s an amazing story.”

The rest was history and Papale’s story came to life on the big screen through Wahlberg and the rest of the cast.

The film was generally well-received, with particular acclaim for its underdog story and sentiment.

Wahlberg now spends his days as a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, which is where murmurs of the actor buying a piece of the Raiders ownership pie came from.

On an episode of Card Shopping, Wahlberg and Brady teased about the purchase.

“It’s crazy because, I know people are going to give me a lot of s—t for this,” Wahlberg said.

“But I live in Vegas. Tom’s got a piece of the Raiders. A lot of my friends got a piece of the Raiders. I went to six home games last year.

“I didn’t make it to any New England games because I live far away. My golf cart just got painted black. I didn’t even know it.”

“You did it on purpose,” Brady said. “I love it.”

“We put the Municipal logos instead of the Raiders logo,” Wahlberg continued. “But listen, could easily find me being, listen, I’m on the home team, so.”

Wahlberg’s home team? It’s now colored silver and black.

Luckily for Wahlberg, he won’t have to lie to majority owner Mark Davis about whether or not he actually played the sport, if he wants a cut of the pie.

His checkbook will do all the talking for him.
