Big Sky Conference commissioner Tom Wistrcill received a contract extension, the conference Presidents’ Council announced this week.
Wistrcill agreed to a five-year contract extension through 2030. He has been the Big Sky Conference commissioner since December 2018, according to a news release from the conference office. Financial terms of the extension were not disclosed.
University of Idaho President C. Scott Green, chair of the presidents’ council, said Wistrcill’s “keen grasp” of the issues around college sports today have allowed the conference to thrive in the NCAA. One of the responsibilities of the Presidents’ Council is employment of the commissioner.
“On behalf of my fellow presidents, we are pleased that Tom has committed to our conference for the foreseeable future, thus allowing the Big Sky to continue progressing along the ascending trajectory on which he has skillfully led us for the past six-plus years,” Green said. “His keen grasp of the myriad issues around college sports, their potential impact on our membership, and how to navigate this unprecedented space has us positioned to not just survive but even thrive in today’s modernized NCAA.”

Sacramento State is leaving the conference in 2026. Southern Utah and Utah Tech will join as full members next year.

“I am honored to continue leading the Big Sky and am thankful for the leadership of and support from our dedicated Presidents’ Council,” Wistrcill said in the news release. “While we are proud of our standing as the premier FCS conference, rest assured that we are far from content and will continue to further elevate the experience of our student-athletes, coaches, and fans. The best days for the Big Sky are still ahead.”
Wistrcill also has evolved into a leading national voice within the college sports industry. He has served on the prestigious NCAA Men’s Basketball Committee since 2022. He’s also served since 2021 on the Collegiate Football Officiating board, which is College Football Playoff and includes two commissioners from Football Championship Subdivision conferences with leaders of each of the 10 Football Bowl Subdivision conference.
In June, Wistrcill was appointed as the vice president of the Collegiate Commissioners Association, the organization for all 32 NCAA Division I commissioners.
