After an opening-matchday defeat to France, this is a game England really need to win. We preview Wednesday’s Women’s Euro 2025 clash with our England vs Netherlands prediction.
England vs Netherlands Stats: The Key Insights
The Opta supercomputer predicts that England will get a much-needed victory in this Euro 2025 match against the Netherlands. Vivienne Miedema became the first Dutch player, male or female, to score 100 international goals in their Matchday 1 win over Wales. England have lost just one of their last 10 competitive meetings with the Netherlands (W6 D3).Wednesday’s meeting at the Stadion Letzigrund in Zurich isn’t technically a must-win game for England, but they absolutely must not lose this game against the Netherlands, or they’ll be staring Euro 2025 group-stage elimination in the face.
Following their 2-1 loss to France on Matchday 1, England are behind both the Dutch and Les Bleues in the table. Should the Netherlands win this game and France beat Wales later in the day as expected, England will be eliminated from the tournament.
Sarina Wiegman will hope to see a drastic improvement from their opening game, as she faces her home nation and the team that she won the 2017 tournament with. That defeat to France on MD 1 was her first as a manager at the European Championship, following back-to-back European titles with the Dutch in 2017 and England in 2022.
England’s recent form will add to the nerves ahead of this game. They have lost three of their last five games in all competitions (W2), which is as many as in their previous 19 matches (W12 D4 L3). A defeat in this encounter would see them lose successive games for the first time since April 2021 under Hege Riise.
With a 3-0 win over Wales in their opener, Netherlands have now won nine of their last 11 UEFA Women’s European Championship games (D1 L1), a run that has seen them keep five clean sheets in the process and average 2.2 goals per game.
Vivienne Miedema scored in that MD 1 win, becoming the first player to score 100 goals for Netherlands (male or female), on her 126th appearance for the nation. Most impressively, none of those have come from the penalty spot.
The English defence will know how much of a threat she poses on Wednesday, with Miedema the all-time English WSL top scorer thanks to her record of 87 goals in 117 games for Arsenal and Manchester City. She is one of 10 Netherlands’ players in their 23-woman squad to play their club football in England.
Wiegman started Alessia Russo in attack on Saturday, with Lauren Hemp, Lauren James and Beth Mead behind her, but in truth, all four struggled to make much of an impact against a strong French side.
Hemp has a good record versus the Dutch, having been directly involved in four goals in her three appearances against them (2 goals, 2 assists), but Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone are waiting in the wings, while youngster Michelle Agyemang looked sharp after coming on at the weekend.
The Dutch have won just one of their last 10 competitive meetings with England in women’s football, including a 3-2 defeat in their last encounter back in December 2023 despite leading 2-0 at half-time. England will hope they can inflict another defeat this time round, and kickstart their Euro 2025 challenge.
England vs Netherlands Prediction
England are predicted to overcome their MD 1 disappointment versus France with a win in this game according to the Opta supercomputer. Across its 10,000 pre-game simulations, England defeated the Netherlands 51.2% of the time, with the Dutch winning 25.3% of sims.
The Lionesses’ chance of winning Euro 2025 has reduced since losing to France on Saturday, however. Before the opening game, they won the tournament in 16.2% of simulations, but that has since fallen to 10.8%. In fact, England are now third-favourites to make it out of Group D, behind France (90.3%) and the Netherlands (57.6%).
