The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has located the vehicle wanted in connection with the deadly hit-and-run of a teenage bicyclist, authorities stated.
Nicholas Laureys and another 15-year-old were riding bikes southbound on Terra Cotta Road in unincorporated Crystal Lake on Wednesday night when an unidentified vehicle struck him from behind, sheriff’s deputies stated.
Sheriff’s officials said, in an update Saturday, they have located a vehicle believed to be involved in the deadly hit-and-run. No suspects had arrested, and no charges had been filed, according to authorities.
Following the crash, family members identified the teenager as 15-year-old Nicholas Laureys, a student at Woodstock North High School. According to police, the driver of the vehicle did not stop and fled the scene. Police added that the teen’s bike had a red, activated taillight at the time of the incident.
The teen was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, the sheriff’s office said.
In an update Thursday afternoon, the sheriff’s office said it asked the public and body shops/car dealerships to contact police if they come across a red or dark-colored 2017-2018 Jeep Cherokee with front end damage.
The crash is being investigated by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office, the release said.
