Ten people were killed and 10 others injured in the early hours of Saturday morning in a horrific collision between two microbuses on the Regional Ring Road in the Manshiyet al-Qanater district, north of Giza Governorate.
Security and medical sources reported that the emergency operations room received a notification on a violent collision between two microbuses near the entrance to Abu-Ghaleb village.
Several ambulances and police vehicles were dispatched to the scene. The victims were transported to the Manshiyet al-Qanater and Oseem Central Hospitals, as well as to the Al-Bagour Specialized Hospital.
Initial inspections revealed complete damage to the fronts of both vehicles.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver of one of the microbuses was attempting to overtake a heavy truck but collided with a concrete barrier placed between the road lanes and construction area.
This caused him to lose control of the steering wheel, and the vehicle to swerve into the same lane in the opposite direction, colliding directly with another microbus coming from the opposite direction.
The Traffic Department partially closed the road until the accident debris was removed using heavy cranes and traffic, which had been completely halted for over an hour, was restored.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health, Khaled Abdel-Ghaffar, is monitoring the incident, while the Public Prosecution Office is conducting investigations to uncover the circumstances behind it.
The Public Prosecution ordered an inspection of surveillance cameras installed on the Regional Ring Road to determine the exact moment of the collision.
It also summoned eyewitnesses and decided to seize the two colliding vehicles and present them to the Traffic Department to determine their technical condition and whether a mechanical defect led to the accident.
The Public Prosecution decided to appoint a three-member committee from the General Traffic Department to prepare a comprehensive report on the causes of the collision.
It also tasked the Criminal Investigation Department with quickly completing its investigation into the incident and summoning the drivers—if they were able to provide statements—for questioning.
This incident once again highlights the challenges associated with the high accident rates on the Regional Ring Road, which has been witnessing recurring incidents, such as one that took the lives of 19 people in Menoufia.
