ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Thousands of people gathered at Ontario Beach Park to celebrate the Fourth of July. The park, which saw several fights in June, had increased police presence to ensure safety during one of the busiest summer holidays of the year.

“Oh my God! Should I go down to the beach anymore,” one beachgoer said?

Marsha Augustin: Did you see the increased police presence? How did it make you feel?

Beachgoer: I did. I felt more secure.

Tyrone Jackson said, “Yeah, knowing that they would be right there. Yes, I feel a lot safer.”

News10NBC’s Marsha Augustin spent the day at the park to gauge how people felt about the extra security. Many beachgoers noticed the heightened police presence.

Daryl Nathan said, “I saw like three sheriff’s cars. I think it does make me feel safer because I know a lot of stuff does go down in this area.”

Police increased patrols at the beach park following a large fight on June 8. The goal was to prevent violence and ensure a safe environment for visitors.

Nathan added, “It will not ruin people’s first experience coming down here and then there’s a fight. And then you see the police, that’s less likely to happen now.” Andy Hoang, visiting Rochester for the first time, came to the beach with his girlfriend Renee Catanach to play volleyball and have a picnic. Catanach appreciated the police presence.

“Especially because on this holiday, maybe people have been drinking or they are more excited and they want to celebrate so if they’re here and they just want to keep the peace and everyone having fun I feel like it’s nice,” said Catanach.

Despite the extra security, some visitors expressed concerns about potential disturbances.

A beachgoer said, “Whether there are cops or not it will stop some but how much can a cop do with a bunch of people.”

Officers planned to remain at the park throughout the weekend to maintain safety. AI assisted with the formatting of this story. Click here to see how WHEC News10NBC uses AI.
