FAIRPORT, N.Y. — Chief of the Fairport Police Department Matthew Barnes has announced his resignation from the police department, effective July 31.

In a resignation letter, Barnes said it has been an honor serving Fairport and the community and he is “humbled to be able to have worn the uniform and patch of the Fairport Police Department.”

He also thanked the Fairport community for trusting him and said “the opportunity that you have bestowed upon me to serve in my current role has been humbling and profoundly meaningful.”

Barnes was first introduced as chief in 2022 and worked with the department for over 20 years.
