OAKLAND — One of three people held in a brazen early-April shooting and robbery in Montclair is now accused of killing someone just one month earlier during a North Oakland shootout.
Kelvin Davis, 20, faces a slew of charges — including murder and attempted murder — in the early March killing of William Robinson, 29, who was fatally shot outside of a birthday party on 61st Street in North Oakland, court records show.
Davis was already being held at the Santa Rita Jail when investigators zeroed in on him as a suspect in the killing.
Oakland police arrested him and two other people shortly after the April 2 robbery of a man who was walking home from a Montclair Village bank, where he had just pulled out $8,000 in cash. Authorities say Davis shot the man three times during the hold-up, which happened in the 1900 block of Cortereal Avenue.
Onlookers rushed in and applied a tourniquet to the man’s heavily bleeding leg, moments before he was taken to a hospital. Oakland police Chief Floyd Mitchell later hailed their actions as having “likely saved the victim’s life.”
Alameda County prosecutors charged Davis with numerous felonies in the mugging, including second-degree robbery, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and possession of a machine gun.
Oakland police now say Davis also fired the fatal shot that killed Robinson in a shootout on March 4.
The gunfire happened when a group of people — including Robinson — approached a birthday party being held at a house on the 600 block of 61st Street, near Bushrod Park, according to court records. Several people in that group fired on the party’s attendees, leading to a shootout between the two sides, the records show.
Robinson was shot in the head and died at the scene, police say.
Investigators later pulled surveillance footage showing Robinson and Davis at a Berkeley High School basketball game about an hour before the shootout, according to court records. A witness also told police that he overheard Davis claim he accidentally shot Robinson during the gun battle, the records said.
When interviewed by detectives, Davis said he didn’t intentionally shoot Robinson and said the killing happened as Davis was being shot at by the party’s attendees, the records show.
Davis remained held without bail Wednesday at Santa Rita Jail.
Another man, Quazauy Waugh, also has been charged with violating his probation, after police identified him as a suspected shooter in the March 4 encounter.
