Renck & File: Rockies owner Dick Monfort owes fans accountability for this mess ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

Dick refuses to talk.

Rockies owner Dick Monfort has declined all interview requests for weeks, including those by The Denver Post. And the fans — yes, there are plenty who still support this tire fire of a team — deserve better.

They deserve accountability and transparency from the top, not an owner ducking for cover.

It would not change the record. The Rockies entered Friday night on pace for 31 wins, which would create a major league abyss. If not Monfort, president Greg Feasel should volunteer to stand in front of the cameras and address this national embarrassment. He had no problem showing his face when the team was good.

Leadership is measured in how adversity is handled. Heck, even Kris Bryant, who I doubt will ever play for the Rockies again and represents the worst signing in team history, meets with reporters.

Core principles include clear communication, taking responsibility, self-awareness, leading by example. This was an AI-generated response, indicating that robots could run the Rockies better than humans. Unless, of course, hiding is your thing.

Sitting in the stands at Coors Field on Thursday, part of a ticket-buying crowd of 28,168, fans could not help but ask me questions. The most common one: Should we have hope?

The simple answer: no.

Not without Monfort stepping away from all baseball decisions. The Rockies will soon post their 13th losing record in 15 seasons. This model is not working. And those responsible for executing his plan — if you want to call it that — have failed miserably. General manager Bill Schmidt has not been defensive when asked to explain this stunning lack of talent. But you don’t get credit for taking blame. You get fired. That is how Major League Baseball works in every market, save for Colorado and Pittsburgh.

Without cleaning house and hiring externally, there is no reason to believe there will be significant improvement anytime soon. Schmidt has a chance to accelerate a restart by trading Jake Bird, Ryan McMahon and Kyle Freeland. By getting quality prospects over quantity. But how can you trust he will get it right when looking at past deals?

The Rockies stink. The least the owner could do for the loyal fans is talk about it.

Nuggets on clock: Now would be a good time for the Nuggets to have a general manager. The NBA Finals will be over soon. The draft is on the horizon (maybe Denver will trade a future pick to get back into the mix). And free agent negotiations begin June 30. Maybe the long wait means Josh Kroenke will bring in an outside voice. Not a bad idea, but waiting too long only creates more confusion that the Nuggets didn’t know what they were doing when they hired the coach first.

College World Series ties: My feelings on college baseball, which my sons were fortunate enough to play, will never change. It would be fantastic if CU and CSU brought the sport back. In absence, it is worth noting that a few former local stars are participating in the College World Series this week. Ex-Regis Jesuit star Dallas Macias is an outfielder for Oregon State, and UCLA catcher Cashel Dugger, a one-time Valor Christian stalwart, starts for the Bruins. Rockies longtime head athletic trainer Keith Dugger was given time off to watch his son. These kinds of moments are why it would be great to see our state schools get back into the mix.
