Work begins on Dubai’s 30km Blue Line ...Middle East

Construction has begun on Dubai’s $5.6bn Blue Line, which runs north to south along a bifurcated route with a total length of 30km.

The project is being built by a consortium made up of Turkish contractors Mapa and Limak with Chinese railway systems supplier CRRC.

As well as the track and auxiliary systems, the work will include a maintenance depot and a 1.3km viaduct over Dubai Creek, the first line to cross this barrier.

The Blue Line will connect with the Green Line and the Red Line, and will have 14 stations, including International City 1, 2, and 3, the Dubai Silicon Oasis and Academic City.

The International City 1 station will have an interchange with the tram system. This will be the metro’s largest underground interchange, with a floor area of 44,000 sq m.

The system will also be connected to the Dubai Tram and Dubai Metro Route 2020, an extension of the Red Line.

The Blue Line will increase the number of stations on Dubai’s metro to 78. By 2040, daily ridership on the line is expected to reach 320,000 passengers.
